Lawn & Landscaping Tips for Summer

The summer is the time of year when you should be able to enjoy the beautiful lawn and landscaping that you have surrounding your home. After a long winter, and a spring filled with yard work that needed to be done in order to restore your landscaping, summer can be considered the big payoff. Whether you like to grill out on your patio near the lawn, or you prefer to simply sit in a chair and sip a drink, you should have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors around your house as often as possible.

Of course, you can never put your gardening duties on auto-pilot, as grass, flowers, trees and shrubs are living things which require attention in order to survive. With that in mind, please review some of the following tips to keep your lawn and landscaping looking great all summer long.

Understand the Risks

As the temperatures rise throughout the summer, be sure to keep an eye on parts of your landscaping that are going to be most at-risk of burning up under the hot sun. Specifically, keep watch on plants, trees, and shrubs that have recently been planted – without a well-established root system, they may not be able to draw the water they need in order to thrive. By providing extra water to your endangered plants, you should be able to keep everything going nicely even when the heat is on.

Water Early

The best time of day to water is early in the morning. It might seem like you should provide your plants and grass with water later in the day when the temperatures are the highest, but it is often too late that that point. Watering during the morning will limit the amount of water that is lost to evaporation, meaning more water will have a chance to work down into the soil. Be sure to pay attention to the watering regulations and restrictions that are in place during the summer months in your area.

Periodic Aeration

This is a tip that doesn’t necessarily need to be used during the summer, but it can help your turf help when the summer months roll around each year. By aerating your lawn, you can improve water penetration and help the overall health of your root system. Once a year is a good rule of thumb for aerating your grass, but that may vary depending on the specific conditions in your geographic region.
